Spring Semester 2023

Melodies through Time

This was an intergenerational music workshop for grandparents and grandchildren. Participants shared their childhood experiences with each other and through guidance by 2nd year students Sho Yong Shuen, Lee Ann, Natasha Lee, Chang Chang Yen, Cheryn Pandora and Hoi Khai Weing, these lifestories were transformed in to music through group creative improvisation on percussion instruments. This activity fostered bonding between grandparents and grandchildren over 2 hours of fun music making. This project was mentored by Artist Fellow Syafiqah ‘Adha Sallehin and Dr Khoo Hui Ling.

Little Red’s Scavengers

This was a musical storytelling workshop designed for students with learning disabilities at Beautiful Minds Charity. It revolves around Little Red Riding Hood’s forest scavenging adventure to gather fruits for her grandmother. 2nd year students Panyakorn Lertnimitphan, Edenia Maureen, Alicia Diva Chandra, Bernice Ong, Papat Lertchanvit and Huang Yi designed a 2-hour long programme that creatively fused interactive narration, musical performance and teaching to engage students with melody, rhythm and instruments. This workshop was mentored by Adjunct Faculty Chong Wai Lun and Dr Khoo Hui Ling.

Spring Semester 2022

A Hogwarts Mystery

Students with learning disabilities from Beautiful Mind Charity visited YST for a musical exploration session set in the world of Harry Potter. Musical concepts of pulse, tempo, simple conducting and timbre came alive with animated story telling and magical costumes. The feedback for this was extremely positive.

Music and Nature

This is a two-part workshop focusing on music and mental wellness.  Students produced a nature-inspired music video focusing on wellness that was shared with staff and patients via QR codes at public places in the hospital. Students then invited staff from Sengkang Hospital for a sound-mining session (regardless of musical background) and produced resulting tracks that could be used in future as relaxing background music at clinics in the hospital.
